Bring your own...MUG! On Friday, December 19th room 311 will become a Winter Wonderland. Students will warm up with a cup of hot cocoa and a holiday treat as they participate in some chilling scientific snowflake activities. Please send your child to school with a MUG from home on Friday. HINT: Last year parents wrapped the mug in a towel or placed it carefully inside of a well protected lunch bag so it would not break on the transport. Throughout the day we will also be reading and writing Poetry. The greatest gift of all is one that is from the heart. Poetry may not be a one size fits all gift, but it is one that will keep on giving! Finally, we will explore the scientific mystery of snowflakes and crystals as we create our own snowflakes ornaments. The class will be sure to get into the holiday spirit after making this. If you are available from 12-3 on December 19th, please consider volunteering to help make this day a success. Today the students in Room 311 Paid it Forward by participating in P.I.R.L.S. Pilot Test. What is the P.I.R.L.S. assessment ? The PIRLS 2016 assessment will provide internationally comparative data about how well children read after four years of primary schooling. Like the previous PIRLS cycles (conducted in 2001, 2006, and 2011), the study will also collect extensive information about home supports for literacy, curriculum and curriculum implementation, instructional practices, and school resources in each participating country. To say I was proud of their efforts, would be an understatement. We are just 1/3 of the way into the school year and I witnessed an amazing feat. Students sat and were engaged for 2 - 40 minute Reading sessions. They worked diligently going back and finding answers in the text. They carefully checked and rechecked their work several times before turning it in. They took this "Pilot" test seriously and approached it with confidence. Remember that feeling when you watched your child take their first steps? That's how I felt today watching the students as they participated in their first "pilot" test. Speaking of Pride...today more students headed to the front of the class as our How To Presentations continued to impress me. Over the past few days we've learned how to sew our own pillow, play chess, make a pizza 2 different ways, draw a horse and a dog, train a dog not to bark, make a balloon dog, bake cookies and make oatmeal. The presentations so far have been creative, easy to follow, and entertaining. The integration of technology has been equally impressive. For years I have assigned this project in June and it was always completed entirely at home. This year it has certainly been a learning curve for me as it has come much earlier in the year than what I have been used to. I guess the students were "test pilots" again as I worked out the logistics. I want to thank you for supporting your child with this assignment, whether it was helping them choose the topic, gathering materials to be used, or typing the final essay. I appreciate the Home-School connection and your patience as I tried something "new" with my class. If your child has not presented, please don't sweat it! This is a learning experience! 1/3 of the 3rd grade year down...2/3 left to go! I can't wait to see where we are at the end! |
