I have received so many positive comments regarding the IXL math website and I'm pleased to report that our class have solved over 7,000 math problems since the beginning of November!
In addition, I'd like to thank the families who provided me with valuable insight about the website.
Here are a few of the FAQ's
My child often gets frustrated when they get a few answers wrong and have to go to the "tutorial" screen. What should I do?
What I love about IXL is that if a student makes the wrong choice or incorrectly answers the problem, the program will offer a quick, simple, visual explanation for how to solve or attack the problem for the future. If they get frustrated, ask them to stop after 3. At a later time, your child can go back to the same section and continue.
How long should my child work on one area?
This is totally up to your child and how long they can remain focussed. I would allow them frequent breaks to get up and move around in between a set number of questions answered.
My child wants to get 100 smart points and won't quit until they reach it, but what happens when they are starting to get answers incorrectly and have to refer to the tutorial page?
For this answer I went directly to the IXL experts. Please read their response below:
Dear Brenda,
Thanks for your e-mail! IXL's SmartScore was designed to adapt to a students' skill level as he or she practices. When a student first starts out in a skill, he or she will be given the easiest questions, and as questions are answered correctly, the difficulty level in that skill increases. To reach a SmartScore of 100, a student must answer the hardest questions in any given skill correctly. Although a SmartScore of 100 is definitely the best score a student can earn, many teachers do have their students practice until they reach a SmartScore of say 80 or 90. You can tell your students to practice until whichever SmartScore you'd like--students definitely do not have to practice until they reach 100.
